Summary:

Train your ears in my opinion is the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to improving your ability to hear certain frequencies.

It doesn't matter whether you're a studio engineer, recording engineer, live engineer, mixer, masterer, composer, game sound engineer or even a live musician...

...If it's in the music industry this tool will help you.

Train Your Ears is a program that will help you identify frequencies within an instrument or an ensemble of instruments.

How will this help you?

Lets say you're in a band and when you play live it sounds like everything sounds great, but when you listen to yourselves back its hard to extinguish one instrument from another, it sounds muddy and there is no separation.

This is due to the lack of EQ being used to reduce the unwanted frequencies, so everything is fighting for the top spot.

But, the problem can be resolved very easily by reducing certain frequencies to allow others to shine.

Which you can learn to do if you train your ears correctly.

Train Your Ears is extremely customizable so it is suitable for anyone beginner or advanced.

You are able to play music from any platform.

But the thing I love most about this program is how easy it is to use.

If you want to be better at your craft...

...This tool is a must!

Watch this video to see what it's all about:

It's that easy to start training!

Interface

In this part of the review I will be showing you around the interface of the program.

It's easy to navigate and very well laid out.

When you open up the program you will be shown this:

Load Up Screen Train Your Ears

Here it shows you how to get started and there are only 3 steps to doing this.

Audio Player

First you click on "Play some music" and this is where you will import your audio.

You can import your music from a folder directly into the player.

This is extremely easy to do.

Just add a file or a folder and you're done!

You can also check the box underneath to jump to a random song each time you start a new quiz, and loop the song or songs.

Train Your Ears Audio Player

You can use the inbuilt white or pink noise which is great for beginners learning to hear what different frequencies sound like.

Or to warm up before a session of mixing.

Finally, you can use the live player to play music from any source such as YouTube or Spotify.

You will have to download Soundflower for mac or VB-CABLE for windows but this is really easy to do and Train Your Ears gives you simple step by step instructions to follow Here.

Train Your Ears Live Player

A great feature I love about this program is you can switch between mono and stereo at any time on the right hand side.

Options

The second part is where you will choose and edit your exercises and the general options.

In the general options section you can change:

  • sound card options
  • Language
  • Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Total score calculation
  • VST/AU Plugins
Train Your Ears General Options

The exercise designer is where you can choose, edit or create an exercise.

This also shows you the mode of that exercise, how many times you have played and your score overall.

Train Your Ears Exercise Designer

You can also edit exercises to suit your skills and abilities.

In here you can change the name and description.

As well as completely customizing the exercise however you wish.

Remember: You always want to be challenging yourself.

Training

Once you have completed the last two steps the last thing to do is to start playing and train:

Train Your Ears In An Exercise

Here you can switch between the original and processed signal and choose your answer using the frequency bars in the middle.

After you have made your answer click show solution and it will tell you if you are right or wrong:

Train Your Ears Right Answer

If you are right it will give you a 100% score and then you press reset quiz to carry on.

But:

If you get it wrong:

Train Your Ears Wrong Answer

It will show you what the answer was...

...And you can even hear your answer compared to the correct answer so you are able to hear and understand where you went wrong.

This way you can remember that and correct yourself next time.

You can do this in the top right underneath the frequency graph.

My Thoughts

I use Train Your Ears every day and I can truly say it has helped me so much and improved my ear tremendously.

Don't believe me?

Just look at how many testimonials they have Here!

There are a few niggles that I would like to point out.

First, all the audio has to come from you.

Which is fine but it would be nice for them to provide us with some unfiltered and unprocessed sounds...

...And maybe separate instruments so you could train you ears to learn how certain instruments respond to different frequencies.

EDIT: They now have some pre made exercises with sounds that you can download from their documentation page here.

I would love to see them implement some kind of levelling system with their exercises where you have to complete a certain amount of challenges to get to the next level.

And as your level increases the challenges get harder.

This would be a lot more fun to play and it would make it easier to play on a daily basis...

...As you will want to play the game and improve you score.

Even without these, Train Your Ears is the perfect tool for anyone who wants to improve their abilities in the music industry.

I recommend this to anybody.

If I lost this version somehow and couldn't get it back.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.
